What a great rehearsal last Saturday. Thank you, thank you, thank you. The band has exheeded our expectations. Now let's take it to another level. I have added mp3s of the tunes we are playing along with adding our 5th tune, "One Mint Julip". Please take the time to listen and practice with the tunes. I am looking forward to rehearsal next Thursday at Drums-n-Moore. Please bring a music stand to this rehearsal!

Schedule

1st Rehearsal - Saturday, May 21, 2005, 10 am - 3 pm Memorial High School Band area

Directions - Take 12/18 west, get off at Gammon Rd Exit, turn right at lights. Follow Gammon through 3 stoplights, school will be on right hand side. Take the 2ND driveway (north end of school) and park. Band entrance is right by the dumpsters.

10 - noon full band
noon - 1 lunch in the band room (provided)
1 - 2 sectionals
2 - 3 full band

Conductors/Clinicians

Jon Schipper - Memorial High School, Madison, WI

Jon Schipper has been the Jazz director at Memorial since 1999. He graduated from UW-Madison with a degree in Music Education in 1998, and works in the Madison area. Jon has shared the stage with artists such as The Temptations, Tower of Power, Maynard Ferguson, and Chick Corea. Jon has played with a number of other groups in Madison, including The Madison Jazz Orchestra, Phat Phunktion, the MATC Jazz Band, and the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps.

Don Deal - Whitewater High School, Whitewater, WI

Don Deal holds a docotorate in Trombone from the University of Wisconsin - Madison and has been the director of bands at Whitewater High School for over twenty years. Don's performing groups vary from his own Jazz Players Big Band and lead trombone in the Madison Jazz Orchestra to the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra.

Bill Grahn - Woodwinds, Freelance musician, Madison, WI

Bill is an active freelance woodwind player around the Madison area. He received Bachelor and Masters Degrees in music from the UW-Madison then spent several years in several Army Bands as well as Special Services and the U.S.O. branches. While stationed at Fort Ord, CA with the 6th Army band, Bill had the opportunity to study privately with Paul Desmond. A long time part of the Doc DeHaven group, Bill plays all styles of music. He has taught at Monona Grove High School and currently runs an active teaching studio from his home. Bill has played lead tenor in the Madison Jazz Orchestra (with a little time off) since it's inception in 1986.

Brian Whitty - Manager, Madison Jazz Orchestra, Madison, WI

Brian, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse, is an active freelance trombonist and pianist. Comfortable in classical as well as commercial idioms, he currently performs with the Wisconsin Chamber orchestra, Beloit/Janesville Symphony Orchestra, the Madison Jazz Orchestra, and is a founding member of Quinthorne Brass Quintet. He has performed with the Madison Symphony Orchestra, the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, the Beloit Janesville Symphony Orchestra, The Madison Brass, the Madison Wind Ensemble, and the MATC Jazz and Concert Bands. Brian also is the leader of the Brian Whitty Group and co-leads the jump blues band, Swingin’ the Blues with Tony Kannen. Brian also is an active teacher, chamber music coach, and clinician. Prior to his move to Madison, Brian was the Executive Director of the Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corps in La Crosse, Wisconsin where he also served as music arranger and program coordinator.

Time After Time - Sammy Cahn/Jule Styne - A great swing chart with space for piano and trumpet solos out front. A swinging soli section for the horns sets up a great shout ending. Listen to an mp3 here.

Milestones - Miles Davis arr. Dave Barduhn - Fast Bebop modal chart. Lots of space for blowing. Drum solo takes us back to the top. Listen to an mp3 here.

It Only Happens Every Time - Thad Jones - A Bossa Nova with tons of colorful sounds. Thick ensemble writing and a bit different harmonies set this chart apart. Listen to an mp3 here.

Big Swing Face - Bill Potts - As played by the Buddy Rich Band. A hot shuffle F Blues chart that swings for the fences. Solo space abounds. Listen to an mp3 here.
