Wow, is all I can say about last Saturday’s event at Full Compass honoring jazz educators, philanthropist John Peterson and welcoming Johannes Wallmann to UW – Madison School of Music.
A wealth of Madison’s jazz community was present – MJO, Dave Stoler, John Christense, Geoff Brady, Hanah Jon Taylor, The Sizzlers, Harmonious Wail, Randal Harrison, Michelle DuVall, Doug Brown, Marilyn Fisher, Tony Castaneda’s Latin Sextet, Dave Cooper, John Stevens, Cliff Frederiksen, John Schaeffer, Johannes Wallmann and more played the entire afternoon.
A diverse and high quality program from all of the performers.
A special surprise at the end of the show, when Susan and Jonathan Lipp, hosts of the event and owners of Full Compass, introduced the editor/publisher of DownBeat magazine, Frank Alkyer, who said that he has been to every major jazz event and festival in the world – this event is a good as it gets! Madison should be proud of it’s jazz community and performers.
A big thanks to Susan and Jonathan Lipp of Full Compass and their staff for hosting the day, providing lunch and refreshments for the performers and making it a great event. Thanks also to Howard Landsman and the new Greater Madison Jazz Consortium for their initiative in establishing this event. Hopefully an annual celebration of jazz!
